Gastrojejunostomy (GJ) tube placement is a medical procedure used to provide nutritional support to patients who have difficulty eating or digesting food through the traditional route. This procedure involves placing a feeding tube that extends into the jejunum, which is a part of the small intestine located just beyond the stomach.
Why a GJ Tube?
A GJ tube is typically recommended for patients who have issues with gastric emptying or severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that prevents adequate nutrition through a standard gastrostomy (G) tube. Conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, severe nausea and vomiting, or certain types of gastrointestinal surgeries may necessitate the use of a GJ tube. The primary goal is to bypass the stomach and deliver nutrients directly into the jejunum, where absorption can still occur effectively.
