How many yoga postures are there?
One of the earliest yoga texts to use the term asana was Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It is one of the eight limbs of yoga according to Patanjali, who also states in sutra 2.47 that asana should be "steady and comfortable." Although it only lists 18 postures, the revered Hatha Yoga Pradipika text also claims that "Shiva taught 84 asanas." However, The Gheranda Samhita, a later text, states that "Shiva describes 8,400,000 asanas." The number of postures in this universe is equal to the number of species of living things. Of them, 84 are the best; of these, 32 have proven to be beneficial to humanity in this world. Only fifteen to twenty-five poses are led by most yoga instructors in a class.
