Real Ear Measurement
An accurate real ear measurement is an important part of your ear health. Ear infections, hearing problems, and other medical conditions can be diagnosed by measuring the size and shape of your ears. Ear measurements are also used to help determine if a child may have a birth defect or wear a hearing aid correctly.
To take an accurate real ear measurement, you will need to:
Lie down on your back with your head and neck supported by a pillow or folded blanket so that your head and ears are in the same vertical plane.
Place a ruler or other straight edge across the front of one ear at its widest point. This is the midpoint between the two ears (see diagram).
Measure from this point to the end of the ruler or straight edge that is touching your head (see diagram). This is your average ear measurement.
