What is Painless Delivery?

Painless delivery refers to the process of childbirth where the mother receives an epidural injection administered by an anesthesiologist. This injection aids in managing and alleviating the pain during labour, making the birthing process less painful for the mother.

It is injected into the lower back, followed by the placement of a plastic tube through which medications are delivered around the spinal cord. It is only injected once while women are in active labour, which means there are at least three contractions every ten minutes.

Although an epidural may not always provide complete pain relief, it does significantly lessen discomfort and feelings in the lower half of the body. Early labour discomfort can be treated naturally with warm showers, massages, and exercises.

Epidurals, according to doctors, are safe for both the mother and the baby and they also provide relief from tiredness and irritation. It allows women to relax and refocus on delivery, but it, like any medical intervention, can have adverse effects.

Types of Epidural Injection

Regular epidural: It contains only local anesthesia, such as lidocaine. When the labouring woman gets a typical epidural, she begins to feel a very heavy, "dead" sensation in her extremities, making lower body movements extremely difficult for her.

Combined spinal-epidural: A combination of local anesthesia, narcotics, and epinephrine is used in combined spinal epidural. When a labouring mother is given this type of anesthesia, she retains some sensation in her lower body. She has gained ease and flexibility in changing her bodily postures. With some movement, she can change to a more favorable birthing position, which will help her baby come out quicker.

Painless Delivery Procedure

Before giving the epidural, a gynaecologist will give the woman intravenous or IV fluids to facilitate a painless delivery. The woman will be asked to bend her back and sit up straight. This position improves the effectiveness of the epidural and reduces complications.

After washing her waistline with an antiseptic solution, a gynaecologist will numb the woman's lower back with local anesthesia. They will then insert a needle into the anaesthetised area of the lower back near the spinal cord. After removing the needle, the doctor will insert a thin catheter through the needle into the epidural region, and then tape the catheter. During labour, the doctor will use the catheter to administer epidural anesthesia. During pregnancy, the medication is used to numb the pelvis and the area beneath it. However, the woman can remain conscious and witness the child's birth while experiencing little or no pain. Benefits of Painless Delivery

  • Fewer postpartum complications: It helps the woman concentrate on the delivery by relieving pain. It is a relaxing tool that can minimise the fatigue and irritation that most women experience during childbirth, lowering the risk of developing postpartum problems.
  • Muscle relaxation during delivery: By relaxing the pelvic and vaginal muscles, epidural analgesia helps the baby's descent.
  • Beneficial for women suffering from heart complications: Mothers who have a history of cardiac difficulties or who are having heart problems may experience severe pain. In these situations, a painless delivery will be beneficial.
  • A comfortable delivery option for mothers over the age of 30: The ability to deal with pain decreases with age. As a result, elderly women can benefit from regular childbirth with epidural analgesia or the painless delivery alternative.

Painless delivery has certain benefits and is also helpful for both mother and child. For more details on painless delivery costs in Mumbai, consult a gynaecologist at Harleys Cosmetic & Women Clinic for more details and to welcome parenthood.
